LAKE HAVASU CITY — Lake Havasu City police report a man littered the back of a police unit with cocaine following his May 1 arrest. It said that Gary Brooks, 26, was pulled over in the vicinity of highway 95 and Centre Boulevard for failing to maintain his travel lane and for an expired license plate.
As officers prepared to issue warnings for the infractions, K9 Echo alerted on the vehicle, prompting search activity.
The officer narrative authored by Detective Robert Draper indicated discovery of a baggy containing about a gram of cocaine in the sun roof area of the Kia Optima. Six pills were found in a pill bottle in the console area, along with a tooter straw and a rolled up dollar bill with white powdery residue from being used to snort drugs.
Brooks was placed in the rear of the police unit in the prison compartment, separated from the K9 area used by Echo. The search was completed and Draper next planned to further search Brooks.
“When I opened the prisoner compartment, a plastic baggy fell out onto the street from the prisoner compartment and then I immediately noticed a large amount of white powdery substance, which I recognize to be cocaine, all over the back seat, Gary’s hands and back side, and the floor,” Draper wrote in his narrative. Brooks was removed from the vehicle for additional searching.
“As I pulled Gary’s pants to his ankles, a large amount of loose cocaine was on the inside of Gary’s pants,” Draper’s report said. “I then began to shake out Gary’s underwear in which cocaine began to fall.”
The report said broken baggies and large amounts of loose cocaine were found all over the seat and prisoner compartment. It said Brooks attempted to shove some of the drugs into the wall seam separating the prisoner and K9 compartments and that about a gram of loose cocaine made its way to the K9 area.
“It did not appear that K9 Echo ingested any of the cocaine and was in good health,” Draper wrote. He said that almost 8 ounces of cocaine was collected an estimated another ounce was lost in the recovery and cleaning operation.
Draper was charged with animal cruelty for endangering Echo. He was also jailed for various narcotics related charges.
The arrest report indicated Draper resides in Santa Clarita, California but his jail booking paperwork reflects another address in Las Vegas, Nevada.
