Lost hikers rescued from Sara Park area

LAKE HAVASU CITY – At approximately 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 25, the Lake Havasu City Fire Department was dispatched to a desert rescue at Sara Park. Two hikers got lost returning from the Sara Park Trail system after attempting a sunset hike. Reports stated that they were lost in the dark but uninjured.

Two Engines, a Battalion Chief, and two desert rescue side by sides responded. Mohave County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue was also requested to assist with the nighttime search. The Lake Havasu City Fire Department rescue crews quickly found the hikers within 25 minutes after emergency crews arrived. Fire Department crews had to hike in on foot due to the location of the hikers. All parties were transported to the trailhead with no injuries.

Lake Havasu City is currently under an extreme heat advisory from the National Weather Service. The temperature during the desert rescue was 110 degrees at nighttime. As a reminder:

* Avoid hiking during the summer months with extreme temperatures.

* Never hike alone and always let a responsible person know where you are going and when you expect to return.

* Always take plenty of water. Plan to carry at least one quart of water for every four hours you hike.

* Wear a hat, sunglasses with UV protection, and sunscreen. Travel light.

* Print off a trail map or use a trail map app on your phone if the route is unfamiliar.

* Make sure your phone is fully charged and consider an additional charging device.

* Do not hike in washes when heavy rainfall is anticipated.
