Local NHRA champion, Leah Pruett, finds ways to give back to community

LAKE HAVASU CITY – Leah Pruett, a National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Top Fuel drag racer for Don Schumacher Racing, took to social media this past week to find ways to give back to the community.  Leah is a resident of Lake Havasu City, and recently spoke to NHRA news reporter Brian Lohnes, via video conference in her Havasu home, to speak about how she is giving back during the COVID-19 pandemic.   During these challenging times, she is donating 100% of her Cameo proceeds to the Havasu Community Health Foundation’s Food Bank.  “This is a perfect example of the wonderful residents we have within our community,” Supervisor Buster Johnson stated.  “As someone with means to be able to help out, she is doing her part and I couldn’t be more thankful for her dedication to this community,” Johnson stated.

Known as the Uplift Challenge, Leah is putting out positive comments to fans who engage her on her Cameo profile.  All proceeds dating back from April 10th through April 17th will be given to the local food bank.  Cameo is an app and website where famous people and celebrities make videos for everyday individuals.  If someone is looking to get a shout out from a certain celebrity who is on the site, they pay a monomial fee and get a personalized video message from them.  So far Leah says she has made a couple thousand dollars to donate to the local food bank.  For the next 24 hours, she is going to cut her rate by 50% to hopefully get more engagement.

Leah Pruett is well known in the drag racing community with 11 total wins in her short career.  Her first career national event win on the professional level came in February of 2016 at the Carquest Auto Parts NHRA Nationals in Chandler, Arizona, where she defeated Brittany Force in the first all-female final round in Top Fuel since 1982.  Another major victory for her was when she won the NHRA SAMTech Factory Stock Showdown championship in 2018, DSR’s first series championship in their first year in the class. Leah is also the only female champion in the short history of the class.  During final event of the 2018 season, Leah unleashed a monster 3.631-second pass, which tied for the second quickest run in the history of the sport and cemented Pruett’s position as the quickest woman in NHRA history.

The Havasu Food Bank feeds nearly 2,000 families a year; however due to COVID-19 they have seen an uptake in those needing the service.  The food bank, which has been in operation for about two years, receives some food through a Feeding America grant, but rely heavily on monetary donations to purchase much of their food.
