The following Lake Mead National Recreation Area events are happening in January.
Ranger Hike: Bowl of Fire, Jan 4
Take a moderate to strenuous guided hike through the Bowl of
Fire. Observe the colors while wandering among a variety of aztec
sandstone formations that are scattered through the Bowl of Fire. For more

permitted. Space is very limited.
BBSC Lake Mead Marathon, Jan 11
Over 900 athletes will race through Lake Mead National Recreation Area Jan. 11 for the BBSC Lake Mead Marathon. The run begins at Boulder Beach and continues on the River Mountains Loop Trail. The race includes a marathon, half marathon, 10K and 5K. For more information on this permitted event, visit www.bbscrun.com/lakemeadrun.
Ranger Hike: St. Thomas – A Town Revealed, Jan 11
Join a ranger and walk back in time to the days before the waters of Lake Mead covered the small farming community of St. Thomas. Explore the remnants of life in earlier times and learn about the lifestyles of times gone by. For more information and to make a reservation, call 702-293-8990.
Volunteer Program: Seed Cleaning, Jan 18
Volunteers are needed to participate in a day of service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Volunteers will be cleaning seeds at the Water Safety Center to be planted in the spring at the native plant nursery. Ranger Program: Star Party, Jan 18
Join rangers at 6:30 p.m. (MST) at the Katherine Landing Amphitheater to learn about the night sky and discuss the impact of light pollution in national parks. Tips on how to protect and view the night sky in the local community will be shared. Telescope viewing of distant constellations and far-away planets will follow from 7 to 9 p.m. For more information, call 702-293-8990.
Fee Free Day, Jan 20
Entrance fees will be waived at Lake Mead National Recreation Area Jan. 20 in celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Fees for camping, lake use or use of concessions still apply.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parade, Jan 20
Join Lake Mead rangers in downtown Las Vegas at 10 a.m. Jan. 20 as they join the community in celebrating the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at the 38th annual birthday parade. The 2020 theme is “Living the Dream – The Time is Right to Do What’s Right.” The parade begins at Fourth Street and Gass Avenue and travels north on Fourth Street to Ogden.
Ranger Nature Walk: Fisherman’s Trail, Jan 25
Join a ranger at 9 a.m. (MST) at the Katherine Landing Ranger Station for a guided nature walk through the granite hills and sand dunes to a picturesque beach. During this easy two-mile hike you will learn about the different habitats that make up the Mojave Desert and the plants and animals that call them home.
