Kingman Petsmart celebrates National Pet Adoption Week with MC Animal Shelter

KINGMAN — National Pet Adoption Week ended on a high note, at least in Kingman, with a very successful adoption day at the Kingman PetSmart store.   A very high percent of available pets to be adopted were placed.

Susan Armstrong is the Mohave County Animal Shelter Volunteer Coordinator.  She was very enthusiastic about the adoption results.

“We are ecstatic.  We love to have adoptions, and when we have “smalls”, it is awesome.  Because they do bring people in to adopt small dogs and it seems to go really fast.  We keep moving, one right after the other, until they all get adopted.”

This was a particularly successful adoption because of all the publicity associated with National Pet Adoption Week, but the shelter pet adoption problem is a year around concern.

“We always have an adoption event every Saturday at PetSmart, Bullhead and Kingman.  So we encourage the public to come in.  We’re here every Saturday from 10 to one,” Armstrong reported.

PetSmart Charities promotes National Pet Adoption Week, not only in Mohave County, but at all of their locations.  While holding onto a newly adopted pet while its new owner completes adoption paperwork, Kingman Store Leader , Dan Hernon, talked glowingly about local and national PetSmart Charities.

“They have donated thousands of dollars to the local community here to help the shelters to be able to get spay and neuters, to be able to get kennels for the dogs, to be able to just do the adoption events like they’re doing today.”

Silly as this may sound, this reporter thinks adopted pets are actually grateful for their new living situation.  Taking advantage of the adoption day, Susan and Michael Olufson share their experience about their recently departed pet, and commented on “gratefulness”.

“The dog we lost over a year ago was a “rescue” dog and it was a wonderful dog.  We loved him dearly.  I think they are grateful, and so are we, we’re as grateful as they are.  Love is a two-way street.”

At the end of the day, there were a couple of empty pet adoption cages at PetSmart in Kingman, indicative of a successful ending to National Pet Adoption Week.
