Jury selection cumbersome for sex offense trial

judge's gavel

KINGMAN, Ariz. – Attorneys are preparing for trial of a Lake Havasu City man charged with sex offenses involving a young girl between 2022 and 2024. The alleged victim was 10 to 12 years old over the interval.

Michael Lee, 34, faces four sexual conduct with a minor counts and another charge for furnishing obscene materials to a minor. A Lake Havasu City Police Department report said the girl described a variety of sexual offenses allegedly committed by the defendant, as well as Lee having her watch adult pornography with him.

A July 1 hearing was conducted to review responses to questionnaires returned by 61 prospective trial jurors. Judge Billy Sipe exposed potential jurors whose answers to questions might have them stricken from the prospective panel pool.

Some expressed support or contempt for law enforcement while one said she couldn’t be fair or impartial due to President Trump’s corrupt Justice Department. Others said they were biased against the defendant by what they had read in mainstream or social media.

One prospective juror was excused for being deceased while others raised issues involving health, transportation and language communication challenges.

Jury selection will continue on Tuesday, July 7, with trial expected to commence the same day.
