Infant dies from heat-related illness, other boating incidents over holiday weekend

LAKE HAVASU CITY – The heat wave apparently claimed the life of an infant on Lake Havasu. The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) reports a four-month-old child who suffered a heat-related illness was transported from a boat to Havasu Regional Medical Center at 5:10 p.m. on Friday, July 5.

Agency spokeswoman Anita Mortensen said the baby died following transport to Phoenix Children’s Hospital. She said the female victim was a visitor from California, but other details are withheld during an ongoing investigation.

Mortensen said deputies responded to a two-boat collision on Lake Havasu near Site 6 at 8:19 pm on July 4.

“It was determined that a 24-foot Yamaha boat with eight occupants was traveling eastbound when it collided with a 27-foot pontoon with eight occupants on board,” Mortensen said. “There was significant damage to the Yamaha boat and two of its passengers suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to a local hospital.”

Mortensen said the operator of the Yamaha, John Schertzer, 42, Yorba Linda, CA, was arrested for operating under the influence.

Deputies reportedly also responded on July 4 at 10:18 p.m. to Thompson Bay after parties indicated belief that a 20-year-old woman had drowned after failing to return from a swim. Mortensen said the person in question was located safe on shore without injury.

Deputies handled a sunken watercraft incident in the Crazy Horse Campground area on Lake Havasu at about 6:24 p.m. on Friday, July 5. Mortensen said nine uninjured people were rescued by other boaters when the 20-foot Warlock they occupied was swamped and sunk to the lake bottom.
