MOHAVE COUNTY – Mohave Community College Head Women’s Soccer Coach Cynthia Cervantes has announced the local lineup for the team’s inaugural season in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).
Bullhead City, Lake Havasu City and Kingman will all be represented on the pitch when the season starts in August 2024. The first-ever Bighorns women’s squad now has signed commitments from Yadhira Robles, Dayanara Barajas and Yazmin Contreras of Mohave High School in Bullhead City; Kadyn Mortenson of Lake Havasu High School; and Daniela Cardenas of Kingman High School.
Robles, a 5’2 Defender, graduated from Mohave High School in 2021. Born in Bullhead City to Maria Paredones, Robles is excited to be a part of the first-ever Mohave Community College Women’s Soccer team. She will major in Emergency Medical Services before working on her phlebotomy certification.
“Yadhira is a key competitive player, and she’s a leader both on and off the field,” says Coach Cervantes.
Barajas, a 4’11 Defender, will graduate from Mohave High School in 2024. Barajas was born to Juan Carlos Barajas Martin and Yolanda Iniguez in Fort Mohave. Barajas is a member of the Challenge FC American Youth Soccer Organization and is excited about making history while playing the sport she loves. Barajas has yet to decide on a major at Mohave Community College.
“Dayanara is competitive both on and off the field, and her commitment to the sport is unique,” says Coach Cervantes.
Contreras, 5’4, born to Veronica Murillo, will also graduate from Mohave High School in 2024, after which she will play the position of Defender for Mohave Community College. Coach Cervantes says Contreras is strong and bold while on the field, two key requirements for excelling at the next level.
Mortenson, 5’3, will take the role of Center Defensive Midfielder for the Bighorns. Mortenson, a 2023 graduate of Lake Havasu High School, was born in Lake Havasu City to Kenneth and Kristin Mortenson. Mortenson still lives in her hometown and plans to major in General Science at Mohave Community College.
“Kadyn is fast and unique,” says Coach Cervantes. “Her personality shines as soon as you meet her, and she is determined and passionate about playing at the next level.”
Cardenas, 5’4, will play Midfielder for Mohave Community College after graduating from Kingman High School in 2024. Cardenas was born in West Covina, California, to Tomas Daniel and Alicia Cardenas. She has yet to decide on a major at Mohave Community College. Coach Cervantes says Cardenas is intelligent and technical, “which is crucial in soccer.”
“I’ve seen all of these players lead and compete on the field and it is important to recognize them, their parents and their coaches,” says Coach Cervantes. “Each and every one of them adds value and understands the commitment needed to play at the next level and be a part of the first Mohave Community College Women’s Soccer team. As we move forward, our objective as a team is to compete and represent ourselves and our community. We look forward to an explosive inaugural season.”
