Garcia withdraws plea, hoping for better case outcome

KINGMAN – A prosecutor withdrew a proposed case resolution agreement when a Bullhead City man balked at his April 16 change of plea hearing in Kingman. Nathan Garcia, 22, was to enter a deal mandating a four-year stay in the Arizona Department of Corrections.

Garcia, however, asked for a continuance to provide time for him to secure private counsel to complete legal proceedings in his case. Mohave County Superior Court Judge Megan McCoy rejected the request, advising the defendant that there’s no guarantee that private counsel can secure a better outcome.

Deputy Mohave County Attorney Tonda Hill withdrew the plea offer and asked the court to schedule the case for jury trial.

Garcia is charged with armed robbery and aggravated assault by domestic violence.

Bullhead City Police Department Public Information Officer Emily Fromelt said Garcia was armed with a gun when he broke into his ex-girlfriend’s apartment in the 500 block of Riviera Boulevard on Jan. 17. She said Garcia assaulted the 23-year-old woman and stole her phone at gunpoint so that she could not call for help.

Judge McCoy told Garcia he could face many more than four years in prison if convicted at trial. She scheduled an April 23 hearing for attorneys to advise on the status of the case.
