Dear Editor,
I’ll be testifying on Mar. 16 before the Arizona Senate Natural Resources, Energy, and Water Committee in strong support of HB2389: S/E River Water Transfer (Dunn), which prohibits huge hedge funds back East and elsewhere from further commoditization of Colorado River communities’s water to sell to the highest bidder in Central Arizona.
Mohave County and the entire Colorado River community are currently fighting the latest such 4th priority Colorado River water transfer attempt by GSC Farm (a subsidiary of Mass Mutual out of Boston) which is pushing to transfer 2,033 acre-feet (662 million gallons) to the Town of Queen Creek for a one-time cost of $21 million so that Queen Creek can build another 5,500 homes.
The water transfer represents a huge transfer of wealth (valued at over $330 million) away from our Colorado River communities, and it sets a horrible precedent for central Arizona cities to do their own similar deals in the future.

Mohave County and the Colorado River communities are committed to fighting this transfer and we support the passage of HB2389 to shut the door to hedge funds and central Arizona cities.
