Fort Mohave man enters guilty plea in accidental shooting case

FORT MOHAVE — An accidental shooting death more than four years ago in Fort Mohave has led to entry of a plea agreement at the Mohave County Law and Justice Center in Kingman. Jeremy Mcryhew, 40, pleaded guilty to a charge reduced to attempted negligent homicide during a December 17 hearing before Superior Court Judge Lee Jantzen.

The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office reported that Cody Waltz, 40, Apple Valley, California was fatally wounded during an attempted firearm exchange at Mcryhew’s Fort Mohave home in the 4000 block of Cavalry Road on April 5, 2021.

Deputy Mohave County attorney James Gilmore said Mcryhew was handing a loaded firearm to Waltz that was pointed toward Waltz and discharged upon his touch. Waltz died following transport to Valley View Medical Center.

Defense attorney Jaimye Ashley told the Court that the gunshot was unintentional and accidental. She said her client had no reason to harm his childhood friend.

Terms of the deal require judge Jantzen to order supervised probation at a January 22 sentencing hearing. The Court can also impose up to 90 days in the Adult Detention Facility.

Gilmore was unavailable to explain why the case is being resolved so long after Waltz was killed.
