Drug dozing parents’ case closed

KINGMAN – The second parent co-defendant from Bullhead City has been placed on probation for napping off a fentanyl buzz in their vehicle with drugs and paraphernalia accessible to their children.

Authorities have alleged that police officers summoned to a commercial parking lot in the 2300 block of Miracle Mile Road at 10:40 p.m. on Sept. 26 had to tap a flashlight to the window of the vehicle to stir the sleeping parents whose 3-, 6- and 9-year-old children were positioned in the back seat.

Shawn Martin, 49, and Melissa Richman, 33, were arrested after police reportedly seized a “tooter” straw, burnt tin foil and about two grams of cocaine from the vehicle. Mohave County Superior Court Judge Derek Carlisle was told during a previous hearing that at least two of the children tested positive for an illegal substance in their system for being present where their parent(s) smoked drugs.

Both parents were convicted of child abuse through previous plea agreements. Judge Carlisle placed Martin on probation for three years during a Dec. 23 sentencing hearing, according to deputy county attorney Jake Chavez.

The prosecutor said the Court also imposed a 90-day jail sentence, crediting Martin for 88 days already spent in custody.

Richman was previously placed on probation for three years and released after spending 58 days in jail.
