Director needed for literacy program in Bullhead City, Kingman

book

MOHAVE COUNTY – Erin Roper, current Director for the Literacy Program in Kingman said they need a volunteer director for both Bullhead City and Kingman.

“The Bullhead Literacy Program hasn’t had a Director since before COVID,” Roper said. “I work full-time and have also been the Director for the Kingman Area Literacy Program. I’m tired; I would like to find someone to replace me too.”

The literacy program is run through the Workplace Education Literacy Coalition of Mohave County (WELCOME). “They are a 501(c)(3) and no one gets paid, not even the director. It’s 100% volunteer.”

She said all the services they provide are free including adult and children education/mentoring in reading and literacy.

“You don’t have to be retired, but there is no pay,” Roper said.

“I think (a director) would have to be someone with a lot of energy, willing to get out in the community to talk about what Bullhead needs. A teacher would be a good director.”

“Statewide, only 36% of third graders read on a third-grade level, less than half. In Kingman, only 25% of third graders read on a third-grade level. It’s very rewarding,” Roper stated.
