Couple survive airplane crash near Lake Havasu

LAKE HAVASU – Multiple agencies responded to a downed airplane near Lake Havasu on Sunday, Dec. 22. Mohave County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) Division of Boating Safety, members of the MSCO Dive and Rescue Team, and Lake Havasu City Fire Department personnel converged at Lake Havasu where they had received multiple reports that a plane went down over the lake.

The ultralight-style aircraft was found crashed on land near Pilot Rock on the Arizona side of the lake. Both the male pilot and his female companion were found on-scene with relatively minor injuries; the pilot suffered an ankle injury. He was transported out of the area by helicopter due to the extreme terrain.

According to an MCSO press release, the pilot’s engine shut off in-flight and he was unable to restart it. During an emergency crash landing, the plane struck several rocks that caused the aircraft to roll onto its side.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are investigating this incident further.
