Colorado City voters pass ballot question to begin holding mayoral elections

colorado city

COLORADO CITY – Voters have approved a ballot question that will change the way that future Mayors are chosen in the north Mohave County community of Colorado City. The measure passed 196-52 in the election conducted by mail that concluded Tuesday, May 20.

“Our council members believe that it is time to implement a change in the current method of selecting our mayor,” Town Clerk Shirley Zitting wrote in a communication last November, requesting Mohave County permission to conduct the special election.

Elected Council members have selected the Mayor from among themselves historically. Voter approval will have candidates running for Mayor being directly elected by the people going forward.

“The people have never had a choice,” Colorado City Mayor Howard Ream said in March. “There is quite a bit of support from the public to have input on who the Mayor is and who represents them…There seems to be a difference in how the community looks at a council member and how the community looks at its Mayor.”

Colorado City residents will directly elect their Mayor for the first time during the 2026 summer-fall election cycle.
