Response to Rick Simpson’s Oct. 20 letter

Dear Editor, Responding to Rick Simpson’s question about the flavor of the “Blue KoolAid” in the Oct. 20 issue of The Standard. I will gladly explain why I think anyone making over $400K a year should be paying a bit more taxes. Maybe it’s just me, but I believe it is high time we—the middle class—get some relief from being the ones paying for most of the expenses running this country’s programs. (Travel on I-40 and see if infrastructure improvement does not need to be addressed?) Will you and your friend be so kind to please explain to the rest…

Honor and care for our veterans

Dear Editor, During World War II, on April 9, 1942, 75,000 United States soldiers and Filipino soldiers were surrendered to Japanese forces after months of battling in extreme-climate conditions.  Soon after the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, Japanese forces began the invasion of the Philippines. The capture of the Philippines was crucial to the Japanese. It would bring them one step closer to the control of the Southwest Pacific. The Philippines were just as important to the U.S. Having troops in the Philippines gave the U.S. footing in the Southwest Pacific. After the invasion of the Philippines,…

Open Letter to Mohave County Supervisor Travis Lingenfelter

The Standard does not normally respond to comments made on social media platforms; however, in your Facebook post dated Oct. 29, 2021 you referred to a news article that The Standard Newspaper published as a ‘Hit Piece’. In your post you write: “A ‘hit piece’ is an attempt to turn public opinion against someone or something under the guise of objective reporting, and it is the lowest form of journalism. And there is always an agenda behind it – Travis Lingenfelter”. You also added: “They tried it when we placed the Kingman Airport on a track of renewed success, and…

Infrastructure bill should be a cakewalk

Dear Editor, America needs attention to our infrastructure. It’s pathetic that our Congress and President are having so much trouble putting something together they can agree on. We managed to spend the equivalent of a trillion dollars in today’s currency on the Vietnam war. What did we get for a trillion dollars? Over 58,000 dead American soldiers. Plus, over 1,500 missing in action and thousands of wounded, many of which were never recovered.  We lost 4,497 American soldiers in Iraq. We spent two trillion dollars in Iraq. We had over 32,000 other casualties. What does America have to show for…

Salmon makes case for Governor to Kingman Republican Women

Dear Editor, At the regular meeting this month, Governor Candidate Matt Salmon told the Kingman Republican Women that he is a fighter for conservative beliefs, is 100% pro-life, and supports the death penalty for heinous crimes. “I have done everything I can to protect the sanctity of life and I believe the 2nd amendment is there to protect the rest of the constitution,” he said. “That is what it is there for, to protect us from a tyrannical government. I won’t compromise on the 2nd amendment.” Salmon served two terms in the Arizona Senate and three terms in the U.S….

Some like it hot, some like it cold

Dear Editor, Valle Vista is a Property Owners Association with by-laws and CL-R’s, so make sure you read them. Also make sure you have your builder get permits from our office before you get them from Mohave County. That way you will get started here by following our by-laws and CL-R’s. We have a nice community church, a 72-hole golf course and clubhouse, and a park and pool. We have a small fire station that doesn’t believe in fire hazards. There are at least two wineries in the area. We play bocce ball and bingo and darts that the community…
