Maxwell pleads guilty to attempted second degree murder and robbery in plea agreement; sentencing June 17

A Kingman man charged in two episodes of violence involving his estranged wife will go to the Arizona Department of Corrections through a plea agreement entered Tuesday. Eric James Maxwell, 42, pleaded guilty to attempted second degree murder in one case and to robbery in the other.    Prosecutor Jeff Haws said the robbery occurred in November, 2017 when Maxwell removed a screen to crawl through a window to enter the building where his wife worked in Kingman. Haws said Maxwell chased the victim through and outside the building and that he committed robbery by taking her cell phone as she…

Car seat safety- look before you lock

As the temperature begins to rise the Bullhead City Fire Department would like to remind parents and caregivers about the dangers of leaving a child inside of a parked vehicle. Heatstroke is one of the leading causes of death among children. When left in a hot vehicle, a young child’s body temperature can increase three to five times as quickly as an adult’s. Unfortunately, parents can forget a child in the back seat. Account for all children. Set up backup systems to check and double-check that no child is left in the vehicle. Never leave a child unattended in a…

BCESD selects district veteran Stewart as new superintendent

Dr. Carolyn Stewart will be the next superintendent of the Bullhead City Elementary School District.  Stewart retired from the district in 2015 after 26 years as an elementary and junior high school principal. The 4-0 vote Wednesday night is contingent upon Stewart’s renewal of her Arizona educational certifications.  Board president Diane Beardsley said the goal is to have Stewart start as administrator of the grade K-8 district before current Supt. Benje Hookstra retires June 30. Stewart and Lynette Michalski, former superintendent of the Gila Bend and Window Rock Unified School Districts, participated in an hour-long community forum before they were…

Santa James honored with key to city and Unity Award

An elderly, legally blind man who sports a white beard, wears Santa Claus attire and shuffles around the city of Kingman appearing hopelessly homeless was honored during Tuesday’s city council meeting.  Mayor Jen Miles presented James Zyla, also known as “Santa James”, with a key to the city and the community’s first Unity Award.    Miles noted that Zyla’s unique story is chronicled in a feature article published earlier this month by the L.A. Times. The piece noted Zyla’s previous involvement in acting in Hollywood and his passion for poetry and music, but that his accomplishments were unknown to many who ignored…

Long takes plea agreement; sentencing May 24

Terms of a plea agreement entered Thursday will send to prison the Kingman woman who stole money from the WAVE-JTED school district while formerly working as its business manager. Deborah Long, 45, pleaded guilty to fraud and theft for stealing money from the district serving western Arizona schools from Parker to Kingman.    Mary Harris, a prosecutor with the Arizona Attorney General’s office, told the Court that Long abused her position to use warrants to write checks to herself, embezzling almost $140,000 between May, 2011 and August, 2016.    Long pleaded guilty to an unrelated theft count arising from her bank employment…

City of Kingman considers option to fund interchange project

The City of Kingman and a financial consultant are working to add a new option that could someday be used to help finance the Rancho Santa Fe interchange project. Mark Reader addressed city council members for 50 minutes Tuesday, explaining that Community Facilities Districts (CFD’s) can be formed to issue bonds to fund public infrastructure projects.    Reader has developed policies and guidelines that the Council may adopt, that would provide the opportunity for developers and residents to form districts to fund projects in the future. With voters rolling back a sales tax last fall and skepticism they’d approve a property…
