A Kingman man charged in two episodes of violence involving his estranged wife will go to the Arizona Department of Corrections through a plea agreement entered Tuesday. Eric James Maxwell, 42, pleaded guilty to attempted second degree murder in one case and to robbery in the other. Prosecutor Jeff Haws said the robbery occurred in November, 2017 when Maxwell removed a screen to crawl through a window to enter the building where his wife worked in Kingman. Dr. Carolyn Stewart will be the next superintendent of the Bullhead City Elementary School District. Stewart retired from the district in 2015 after 26 years as an elementary and junior high school principal. The 4-0 vote Wednesday night is contingent upon Stewart’s renewal of her Arizona educational certifications. An elderly, legally blind man who sports a white beard, wears Santa Claus attire and shuffles around the city of Kingman appearing hopelessly homeless was honored during Tuesday’s city council meeting. Mayor Jen Miles presented James Zyla, also known as “Santa James”, with a key to the city and the community’s first Unity Award. Terms of a plea agreement entered Thursday will send to prison the Kingman woman who stole money from the WAVE-JTED school district while formerly working as its business manager. Deborah Long, 45, pleaded guilty to fraud and theft for stealing money from the district serving western Arizona schools from Parker to Kingman. Mary Harris, a prosecutor with the Arizona Attorney General’s office, told the Court that Long abused her position to use warrants to write checks to herself, embezzling almost $140,000 between May, 2011 and August, 2016. The City of Kingman and a financial consultant are working to add a new option that could someday be used to help finance the Rancho Santa Fe interchange project.
