Bullhead City Fire Department Urges Christmas Tree Safety During the Holiday Season

BULLHEAD CITY – The Bullhead City Fire Department reminds residents to prioritize fire safety this holiday season. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), between 2018 and 2022, an average of 155 home structure fires per year in the U.S. were caused by Christmas trees, resulting in four civilian deaths, seven civilian injuries, and approximately $15 million in property damage annually.

To help residents enjoy a safe and festive holiday, the Bullhead Fire Department offers the following Christmas tree safety tips:

Christmas Tree Safety Tips:

* Artificial Trees: Ensure the tree is labeled, certified, or identified as fire-retardant by the manufacturer.

* Fresh Trees: Choose a tree with green needles that don’t fall off when touched. Cut 1-2 inches from the trunk’s base before placing it in water, and ensure the tree is watered daily.

* Tree Placement: Keep the tree at least three feet away from heat sources like fireplaces, space heaters, or heat vents. Ensure the tree doesn’t block exits.

* Lighting: Use lights labeled by an independent testing laboratory. Replace worn, broken, or frayed cords and follow manufacturer guidelines on how many strands can be connected.

* No Candles: Never use candles as tree decorations.

* Unplug Lights: Always turn off tree lights before leaving home or going to bed.

Post-Holiday Disposal:

Dried-out trees pose a serious fire risk and should be removed promptly after the holidays. Never store dried trees in your home, garage, or near the exterior of your home.

Smoke Alarm Safety:

Please install smoke alarms inside each bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home, including basements—place alarms in living rooms or near stairways for homes without bedrooms on certain levels.

Residents needing smoke alarms or assistance with fire safety are encouraged to contact the Bullhead Fire Department’s Community Risk Reduction Division at 928-758-3971

Stay Safe, and Have a Happy Holiday Season!
