Brewery donates school supplies to educators

Travis Scarborough (left) and David Leonard (right) of Four Peaks Brewery all geared up to donate school supply teachers to local teachers at Smith’s Grocery.

LAKE HAVASU CITY – For more than a decade, Four Peaks Brewing Company has supported school teachers each year. The Four Peaks for Teachers Pickup took place on Tuesday, July 16 at Smith’s Grocery Store.

This support would never have occurred if hadn’t been for co-founder of Four Peaks Brewing Company Jim Scussel. While at a brewpub, Scussel overheard a group of teachers complaining about the lack of school supplies over drinks.

It was a conversation that was so upsetting to the co-founder that he invited himself to their discussion.  It was an ear opening experience, as Scussel would soon learn that the budgets that most schools have are not nearly enough to cover the simplest needed classroom essentials like pencils and even paper.

Instructors often will spend money out of their own pockets to do their jobs effectively, and ensure student success in the classroom. Some teachers have spent hundreds of dollars on school supplies throughout the school year.

Customers, family, and Four Peaks staff rallied and took action in the summer of 2011. Together, they donated school supplies at the Brewery. It was a selfless act that transformed into the Brewery’s nonprofit, Four Peaks for Teachers.

Since then, the nonprofit has donated school supplies to over 50,000 teachers not only in Arizona, but Utah, New Mexico, and Nevada. Havasu teachers registered online for their pickups which included a QR code to show to the volunteers of the event to obtain their school kits. For Peaks for Teachers will be giving $1,000 in grants for school supplies to 11 teachers.

These instructors will be located across the southwest. One lucky teacher will be eligible to receive a $3,000 grant along with catered staff lunch. Do you know a special teacher that you would like to nominate?

Nominee entries can be placed by visiting fourpeaksforteachers.org/nominate/. Deadline for this year’s submissions will be on Tuesday, July 30. Four Peaks Brewing Company, wants to extend their appreciation to all teachers, for their diligent hard work and dedication for their students.
