BATS bus crashes on New Year’s Eve

BULLHEAD CITY – Police in Bullhead City handled two high-profile traffic related incidents, one of them fatal, on the last day of 2024. The first incident at 10 a.m. Dec. 31 occurred when the driver of a Bullhead Area Transit System (BATS) bus suffered a medical event.

Public information officer Mackenzie Covert said the public transit bus was northbound on Miracle Mile Rd. when it drove into a temporary road closure barricade and stuck unoccupied construction vehicles.

“The BATS driver and two passengers were transported to Western Arizona Regional Medical Center (WARMC) by Bullhead City Fire Department paramedics with minor injuries,” Covert said. He added that no citations have issued and that the accident investigation continues.

Officers subsequently responded at 3:40 p.m. to the fatal two-vehicle collision on Highway 68, near Landon Drive.

“A 2004 red Ford Explorer was reportedly traveling westbound on Highway 68 when it collided into a Can-Am off-road vehicle that was attempting to cross the highway,” said public information officer Emily Fromelt. She said the 78-year-old man from Mohave Valley operating the Ford was transported to WARMC for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Fromelt said the 48-year-old female passenger in the UTV was dead on scene while the 49-year-old male who was driving was flown to Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas for treatment of serious injuries. The names of the UTV victims are initially withheld.
