Axon prosecution for mother’s death proceeding

Gabrielle Axon

KINGMAN – Case complexity is slowing the prosecution of a Mesa woman who allegedly killed her mother in Kingman more than two years ago. Attorneys during a Nov. 14 hearing advised the Court they need more time to gather and exchange evidence in the Aug. 2022 death of Brenda Marshall, 71.

Gabrielle Axon, 52, is charged with second degree murder. Authorities allege Axon killled Marshall in Kingman before transporting her body to Mesa where it was left in an abandoned vehicle.

Prosecutor Carolina Czaplinska and Public Defender Bob Heieck advised Judge Doug Camacho that disclosure is not yet complete, despite the age of the case. They indicated that case information, particularly on the Mesa end of the matter, is still being divulged.

“There’s definitely more evidence heading to the defense,” Czaplinska said.

Judge Camacho granted the lawyer’s request for more time and he continued the status conference to Jan. 7, 2025.

The victim’s body was located in a plastic tote in her own SUV that was parked on Main St. in Mesa. The tote was lidless, but the matching lid was reportedly found during a search of the victim’s Kingman residence.

The Medical Examiner concluded that Marshall was murdered by manual strangulation.
