$12 million drug bust: Cocaine, meth seized

BULLHEAD CITY – Authorities report two arrests and the seizure of more than $12 million in illegal drugs during an Interstate 40 traffic stop last Thursday, February 20. Multiple drug charges, firearm charge for Havasu man

LAKE HAVASU CITY – Mohave County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) deputies were called to investigate a suspicious man inside an RV, where the property owners were not at home. A man matching the description, Ellis Dan Handley, 42 of Lake Havasu City, was detained nearby. Handley was physically restrained due to repeated requests to remove his hands from his pockets. It was found that Handley possessed a gun in his pocket, along with drug paraphernalia. KINGMAN – A former California law enforcement official who allegedly embezzled $100,000 from a Merced County sheriff’s association group has been arrested in Kingman. Deputy Chief Rusty Cooper said Kingman police learned that former Merced County Sheriff’s deputy Phillip Brooks, 52, was staying at a home in the 2400 block of Natalie Street. Cooper said officers used a PA system to contact anyone inside the home at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 23. “Brooks exited the home and was taken into custody without incident,” Cooper said. Bencheqroun takes plea in murder case

KINGMAN – A lengthy prison term awaits a Bullhead City woman who has entered a plea agreement in a double homicide. Lamya Bencheqroun, 28, pleaded guilty Friday to first degree murder in the death of Mona Carter, 51, and to kidnapping Darryl Ward, 22. Prosecutor Jaimye Ashley said both victims were interrogated and tortured before they were shot and killed in January, 2018. She said Carter was falsely suspected of being a narcotics snitch for law enforcement and that Ward was suspected of stealing heroin from Bencheqroun.
