APWA awards Kingman for Beale Street improvements

Kingman, Arizona, USA - October 24, 2018: Welcome to Kingman downtown, a wide arched street sign located on historic route 66.

KINGMAN – The City of Kingman’s Beale Street Streetscape Revitalization Project has been awarded the 2025 Project of the Year Award for Small Cities and Rural Communities by the Arizona Chapter of the American Public Works Association (APWA).  This recognition celebrates the transformation of Kingman’s historic downtown corridor into a more walkable, accessible, and inviting destination. The award also reflects the City’s commitment to quality infrastructure investment and the strong collaboration between City Council, staff, contractors, and community partners who brought this long-awaited vision to life.

The Beale Street Streetscape Project was the result of nearly three decades of planning and research, dating back to 1998. The project provided a complete overhaul of downtown infrastructure while enhancing the area with thoughtful landscaping, new lighting, benches, trash receptacles, and wayfinding signage. Importantly, much of the brickwork incorporated into the project was reused historic material, reducing waste and strengthening Kingman’s identity by blending the city’s past with its present.

Together, these improvements have created a safe, attractive, and welcoming downtown atmosphere that connects pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists to key destinations along Beale Street from First to Sixth Street. Since its completion, the project has already generated increased foot traffic and community activity, demonstrating its positive impact on both residents and visitors.

“This award validates years of dedication, planning, and collaboration,” said Kingman Mayor Ken Watkins. “The project represents more than just infrastructure improvements.  It’s an investment in Kingman’s future and a testament to the pride we take in our community.”

The City of Kingman extends its appreciation to the many partners, contractors, and community members who helped make the Beale Street Streetscape Project a reality. With this award, Kingman is recognized among Arizona’s leaders in public works and community development, further strengthening the importance of revitalization projects in building a vibrant and connected future.
