KINGMAN, Ariz. – Ryan Garcia, Executive Director for the Kingman Food Bank said they are almost out of meat for their customers. He said grocery stores like Walmart, Smiths, Safeway and Bashas haven’t been donating as much meat as they have in the past, leaving them short for their customers.
“We used to serve 90 customers a day, but we’ve had to cut back to 70 because our shelves are getting low,” Garcia said. Currently, they have to put limits on how much of each item (canned goods, vegetables, breads, etc. a customer can take.
The Food Bank is in need of any meat item, like chicken, pork, fish, and ground hamburger, Garcia said.
The Elks and Moose Lodge had a contest in July to see who could donate the most food to the food bank. About 7,000 pounds of food came in during that time, but only lasted a couple of weeks. None of it was meat.
Garcia said they could also use a few more volunteers to work at least two hours a day or as long as they can stay.
“A regular shift is 7 a.m. to noon,” Garcia stated, but said he could work with a volunteer’s schedule.
“I’d like to put out a challenge to other organizations and agencies,” Garcia said, “to see who can bring in the most food to help the Food Bank and the community that we serve, just for bragging rights.”
Not only is it fun, it helps a lot of people.”
