KINGMAN – The name of the man who was killed in an Officer Involved Shooting (OIS) about five miles east of Kingman has been identified as Levi Ray, 47, Albuquerque, New Mexico. The identity of the decedent in the May 2 encounter with a Mohave County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) deputy was released May 7 by the Kingman Police Department (KPD).
The KPD is conducting an independent investigation, standard procedure in OIS incidents.
Deputy Chief Joel Freed said the deputy responded to a report of a motorhome causing damage after crashing into a gas pump at a truck stop off of Interstate 40. He said a records check revealed that the driver of the motorhome was named in a New Mexico arrest warrant for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
“When the deputy approached Ray to take him into custody on the warrant, Ray produced a knife and ran towards the deputy,” Freed said. “The deputy, a six-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Office discharged his firearm, striking Ray.”
Freed said the deputy was uninjured, but that Ray was dead at the scene. Investigation continues.
