Dear Editor,
I appreciate the op letter by Brian Walter, “We’ll get through this together.” Pointing out the high cost of tariffs that are taxes that pay for Trump’s illegal wars while millions go without less food among other things.
But then Donald Trump did tell us earlier this year there would be “not 25 pencils but only 5,” and instead of “30 dolls, only 2 or 3.” As if to say that some deserve less than others? Including children? Knowing he and his family do not need or want for anything.
But whatever he meant, he was letting us know what was coming down the pike: We will be going without. And here we are. The holidays upon us with less in our pockets because of higher costs, but he threatens and shames anyone who dares to question him about it or about anything for that matter.
Including his recent guest to the White House, the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, who Trump defended for signing off on the horrific murder and dismemberment of a Washington Post journalist who reported on the inhumane treatment of his people and his funding of terrorist groups.
While Trump shrugged it off, saying, “Things happen,” he ripped into the reporter who asked about it, threatening to take her license away and the license of the media company she works for. Forgetting, unlike Saudi Arabia, we still live in a country with a free press.
But instead, Donald acting like a snarky teenager when asked hard questions—telling a woman reporter, “Quiet, Piggy,” when she asked him about the Epstein files—is telling in itself.
Thinking he doesn’t have to answer to anyone including his own voters who put their faith and trust in him to fulfill his promises to bring down the cost of living. Not increase it. Or make our country safer when he’s doing anything but. Terrorizing cities and militarizing states. That’s putting us and our National Guard in unnecessary harm. And all the while going out of his way to get us into a war with a country that’s too close for comfort.
And it doesn’t help matters allies are hesitant to share intelligence with us because of how badly Trump’s favorite “Fox TV weekend host” is running the Pentagon. While Trump whiles away, turning the White House gold and bulldozing it and winning and dining billionaires and murderous foreign dictators he ignores his plummeting ratings—which he calls, like everything a “hoax.” And said, “the stock market tells me how the people are doing,” when most don’t even own stocks.
Regardless, the holiday season will be different with our pocket book and certainly different in a way I’ve never heard during the holiest time of the year (or at any time), calling for the hanging of government officials who’ve served in the military who said by law our military men and women do not have to obey an hoarder that’s unlawful and violates our constitution. Need our president be reminded, our military swears an oath to the Constitution, not a U.S. President.
A president today with no conscience or soul that keep thousands away from places of worship as secret police prowl around outside community churches looking for their next victims. Knowing they’ll be there to worship the birth of our savior. Attacking Christians that citizens and clergies are risking their physical safety trying to protect. A sad and soulless way to bring in the holidays.
But as Mr. Walter had suggested, we can rise above the cruelty and chaos by giving in whatever ways we can. Donating our time and food and toys. And, yes, as Mr. Walter did, he even changed political parties to show an allegiance with those who believe our tax money should be used to better lives, not create wars and believe in human dignity and diplomacy and respect for other countries’ sovereignty.
Making a difference for the better. Regardless how difficult spending the holidays will be with “Donny Two Dolls,” as Mr. Walter said. “We’ll get through this together.”
