KPD, BCPD, MCSO receive over $100K in highways safety grants

Desert Highway And Mountains At Sunset, Death Valley National Park, California

MOHAVE COUNTY – The Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) has awarded more than a hundred thousand dollars in grants to Kingman Police Department (KPD), the Bullhead City Police Department (BCPD), and the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO).

Kingman Police Department

KPD was awarded a $27,000 grant from GOHS for DUI/Impaired Driving Enforcement. The grant funds will be used to pay for officer’s overtime costs for enhanced targeted DUI and impaired driving enforcement throughout the City of Kingman beginning October 2025 through September 2026. The goal of the Impaired Driving Program is to reduce alcohol and drug related driving fatalities and injuries through enforcement, education, and public awareness throughout the State of Arizona.

KPD is an active participant of the Western Arizona DUI Task Force, which includes the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office, Arizona Department of Public Safety, Bullhead City Police Department, and Lake Havasu City Police Department. KPD, in coordination with the Western Arizona DUI Task Force, will conduct saturation patrols throughout the year with an emphasis on holidays and specific event days when incidents of impaired driving are higher.

Impaired driving is recognized as a violent crime and with significant consequences in Arizona. Impaired drivers arrested for DUI drugs or DUI alcohol will go to jail and their vehicle will be impounded. The average cost of a DUI offense is approximately $10,000 in fines, court fees, vehicle impound, insurance rates, etc. These economic costs don’t factor in other, more personal costs such as the for the potential loss of life or your job.

The Kingman Police Department urges residents to plan ahead for a sober ride home in advance if you plan to use an impairing substance or will be drinking alcoholic beverages.

Bullhead City Police Department

BCPD has been awarded a $65,340 grant from GOHS for impaired driver enforcement and traffic safety. The grant will provide overtime reimbursement for officers to conduct targeted saturation patrols focusing on impaired drivers and traffic violations.

The Bullhead City Police Department extends its sincere appreciation to AZ GOHS Director Jesse Torrez and his staff for their continued partnership and support of our efforts to help reduce collisions and remove impaired drivers from Bullhead City roadways.

“This significant grant reflects the trust and confidence AZ GOHS has in the Bullhead City Police Department and recognizes the hard work our officers have demonstrated over the years,” said Lieutenant Eddie Espinoza. “We are committed to putting these funds to good use through proactive enforcement efforts that help keep our community safe.”

The Bullhead City Police Department will begin using the grant funds to conduct extra patrols on Halloween weekend. Halloween can also be a night for adults to dress up and there’s nothing scarier than an impaired driver.

Mohave County Sheriff’s Office

MCSO has received funding from GOHS for overtime funding for alcohol and drug related enforcement in a total grant amount of $15,000. MCSO’s goal is to decrease the number of impaired driving related incidents and ensure safer driving conditions for citizens. The funding for overtime details will assist in having extra deputies on patrol during holiday weekends and special events to deter impaired driving.

Sheriff Schuster thanks Director Torrez and the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety for their continued support of the safety of Mohave County and its citizens.
