Response to J.M.: Tariffs are not the problem

letter to the editor

Dear Editor,

I doubt students in the 1980’s and today’s Teacher Union run public schools studied tariffs as written in to the United States Constitution.

J.M. leaves out the United States government was funded with tariffs then in 1913 Congress decided to allow every American citizens earnings to be taxed. This allowed the Globalists in our government to fund future wars and social programs along with creating a massive federal agency named the Internal Revenue Service to make sure every working American paid their taxes.

Blaming the Great Depression on tariffs is a stretch considering the greed and excesses of the 1920’s. These Historians you cite that believe tariffs led to the attack on Pearl Harbor ignore the fact the United States imposed an oil embargo on Japan as they invaded pre-communist China and pacific island nations for their oil and other natural resources. The United States pacific naval fleet would be the only viable deterrent to Japan’s plan of dominating the pacific.

The value of the dollar has been volatile since removing the dollar from the gold standard in 1973. Insider trading by some of our elected officials is never prosecuted. Business owners who are caught are made an example of while the political elite get away with it.

All of us in time will benefit when fair trade deals are completed. The businesses that are complaining are the companies large or small that have bought and sold cheap Chinese made products to the American consumer to pad their bottom line.

So far inflation has slowed and jobs are available for those who want to work. President Trump has let the big pharmaceutical companies know that the United States will not continue to subsidize the rest of the world so they can pay low prescription drug prices as Americans struggle to pay outrageous prescription drug prices.

J.M. seems to have a problem with successful Americans working hard to accumulate wealth. Our country would not have survived this far if citizens had not worked and sacrificed. Wealthy citizens should not be unfairly overtaxed to support individuals that do not want to work. All this wealth could not support all the poor in the United States, let alone, the rest of the world!
