KINGMAN – The City of Kingman will move forward with renaming the new I-40 interchange, formally known as Rancho Santa Fe Parkway, to Flying Fortress Parkway, following the successful community-led fundraising effort to cover the full cost of the change.
Last month, residents were invited to participate in a name selection survey, which presented four options for consideration. Flying Fortress emerged as the top choice, beating out other contenders including keeping the name Rancho Santa Fe. The name pays tribute to Kingman’s deep-rooted military aviation history and the legacy of the B-17 Flying Fortress bombers once stationed at the Kingman Army Airfield during World War II.
The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) required $6,326 to implement the name change. Per direction from the Kingman City Council, no additional tax dollars were allocated to the project making the name change entirely contingent on community fundraising. Thanks to strong public support, the full amount was successfully raised by residents and local stakeholders.
With funding now in place, the City will begin coordinating with ADOT to begin the official renaming process and install updated signage.
