International Day of Peace to be observed

letter to the editor

Dear Editor,

Weather permitting …. come join other peace-loving citizens at Locomotive Park in an awesome testimony in support of peace at the International Day of Peace observance on Saturday, September 21, from 11:30 – 2:00!  This non-partisan Kingman event features this year’s international theme which is Cultivating a Culture of Peace.  There will be a traditional bell ringing ceremony at noon, coinciding with others worldwide to create a symbolic wave of peace to coincide with the opening of the UN.  Informal discussions and activities to follow as to how we, individually, as a community, and as a nation, can advance a culture of peace, using negotiation and cooperation over confrontation.

Since 1982 the International Day of Peace is held annually worldwide and is traditionally observed on September 21.  This day reminds people worldwide of the UN’s mission, which remains a commitment to achieving world peace.

As Dr. Martin Luther King so aptly stated:  Nonviolence means avoiding not only external physical violence but also internal violence of spirit. You not only refuse to shoot a man, but you refuse to hate him.  May peace prevail on earth far and wide to embrace the lands and people of this earth.  Hope to see you on the 21st!”
