Flemmons takes state wrestling championship

KINGMAN – Nic Verville got the party started years ago with a state wrestling championship for Lee Williams High School (LWHS). James Wayman followed before his brother Payton Wayman won back-to-back state championships for the Volunteers.

And Nevaeh Flemmons has carved her niche in LWHS wrestling history with her own state title. Flemmons pinned all four opponents over the weekend to win the Arizona Division II girls wrestling championship in the 138 lb. weight class.

The 17-year-old junior was 58-2 heading into state.

“When I looked over the bracket there was a lot of girls that I already wrestled, so I was pretty confident,” Flemmons said. “My first three matches I won but I didn’t feel like I wrestled great until the finals match. I beat that girl before but she was a tough opponent, so I knew I had to wrestle strong.”

Flemmons used a pin for the win over a Snowflake High School adversary for the championship. She thanked her coaches for their support and Payton Wayman for twice daily training sessions over the summer.

Flemmons is dedicated to a perfect run and another state championship for her senior year as a Volunteer.

“That’s the goal,” Flemmons said. “I plan to win again next year and my goal is to go undefeated.”
