The importance of helmets on motorcycles

The Bullhead City Fire Department would like to remind citizens that a helmet is the most important piece of safety equipment that can be worn when riding a motorcycle. Age, damage, and wear can all affect a helmets ability to do its job? The Center for Disease Control and Prevention advised using an approved (DOT) helmet can reduce the risk of head injury by 69 percent and the risk of death by 37 percent. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation 2016 fatal crash data, NHTSA found that motorcyclist deaths have recently increased by 5.1 percent. Before gearing up for riding, make sure your helmet is ready to ride.

All motorcycle helmets sold in the United States are required to meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 218, the performance standard that establishes the minimum level of protection for helmets designed for use by motorcyclists. BCFD encourages riders to stay vigilant, wear a Department of Transportation (DOT) approved helmet and remember that all vehicles have blind spots when only mirrors are used.
