Umphress faces first-degree murder charge

MOHAVE VALLEY – A hatchet murder is under investigation in Mohave Valley. Mohave County Sheriff’s deputies responded at 9:11 p.m. Thursday, May 7 to a report of a hatchet assault at a residence in the 1200 block of Vacation Dr.

Agency spokeswoman Anita Mortensen said Nicholas Umphress, 33, was detained as he approached arriving deputies. They entered the residence and found a deceased head trauma victim identified as Victor Hernandez, 33.

“Witnesses alleged that Umphress had been acting strange and pacing in the living room before the unprovoked attack,” Mortensen said. “Investigations revealed Umphress struck the victim multiple times with the hatchet and then attempted to clean up the scene before law enforcement arrived.”

Mortensen said the floor had been flooded with water. Umphress was arrested and jailed on a first-degree murder charge.

  1. I knew the deceased. He was like a brother to me. I’ll miss him deeply. Why is all I want to know???
