LAKE HAVASU CITY – Casino Night at the Lake Havasu Yacht Club was this past Saturday, Nov 11 at the Havasu Yacht Club. This was a fundraising event for the Mohave County Boating Safety Program whose mission is to provide boating safety to the community through education and volunteer opportunities.
It was in 1969 when three enthusiasts of boating thought they should form a yacht club. After the three men put an article in the paper, their first meeting took place at Smoketree School. Other meetings continued and they were usually held at schools or locations by the lake.
With only 22 original members, the club officially formed in 1970. By 1972, the club had its own building. A prefabricated metal building that was originally used for engineering and construction on the island. The club eventually became members of the United States Yacht Racing Union.
A union that has international recognition. In the early 1980s, the club was on the search for a more permanent home. In 1986, an unused piece of land on London Bridge Road was leased to the Yacht Club. By 1988, the club finally were able to move into their new facility.
Over the years, The Yacht Club proudly supports several youth-related and community lake activities. The club’s future endeavors have plans for more youth programs, improvements for their clubhouse, and sailboat racing activities. At their Casino night, guests were able to gamble $500 in play money and one free raffle ticket along with their ticket purchase. Tables included Texas hold-em, craps, blackjack, and roulette.
Commodore of The Yacht Club Phyllis Lawson feels that the security she feels from the club is what fuels their ongoing success with events like Casino Night. “I look at the members of this club like they are family, and that is what is really important to me.” Casino Night was yet another smash hit for The Lake Havasu Yacht Club.
