KINGMAN, Ariz. – A Bullhead City man’s wish for freedom to begin substance abuse counseling and treatment at the Oxford House won’t be granted as quickly as he would like. Judge Billy Sipe did place Russell Wilson 50, on supervised probation, but he also ordered him to serve 30 days beyond the 90 days already spent in custody at the Mohave County Adult Detention Center during an Oct. 7 sentencing hearing in Kingman.
Wilson pleaded guilty to aggravated assault for striking his 81-year-old father on July 9 at the residence they shared in the 1400 block of Plata Dr. Deputy County attorney Leah Nelson previously told the court that the nearly blind victim was unable to defend himself and suffered a bloody nose and a cheek contusion.
Bullhead City Police Department public information officer Emily Fromelt said Wilson told police the confrontation involved father-owed debt while the victim said the argument involved his son’s medication and drug use issues.
Judge Billy Sipe said it appears Wilson stopped taking prescribed medication and instead self-medicated with illegal drugs. “It’s clear to me that you maybe suffer from some mental health issues,” Sipe told Wilson.
Sipe noted six previous felony convictions, though none of them more recent than 2012. Sipe granted the victim’s request for a no-contact order, but also noted that Wilson’s father is supportive of his son’s opportunity to use probation to better himself.
