Volunteers needed for community desert cleanup Feb. 20

BULLHEAD CITY – The City of Bullhead City, in partnership with Golden Vertex, Republic Services, and the Bureau of Land Management, is inviting residents to help clean up the desert along Silver Creek Road on Friday, Feb. 20, at 7:30 a.m.

“We’re looking for civic-minded people to help make our annual Silver Creek clean-up a great success,” said Bullhead City Administrative Analyst Karen Spletzer, who is organizing the City’s contribution to the clean-up event. “In previous years, over 50 volunteers helped us fill and remove enough trash to fill one and a half large roll-off dumpsters, and we’re looking to do it again.”

Volunteers, along with staff from the participating organizations, will clean the banks along Silver Creek Road east of Bullhead Parkway, focusing on removing large items, such as tires, discarded furniture, and electronic appliances. Participants will also gather and remove smaller items, including spent bullet casings and other trash and debris.

Participating organizations will provide garbage pickers and trash bags for volunteers. The City and its partners will also provide heavy equipment and staff, as needed, to remove large items. Volunteers will be responsible for providing their own closed-toed shoes, hats, and gloves.

The City encourages volunteers to meet up at the designated location on the south side of Silver Creek Rd, less than a mile east of Bullhead Parkway.

“Crews from the City and our partnering agencies will already be there waiting,” said Spletzer. “We’ll be just on the right side of the road. You can’t miss it, pull off the road and check in with the staff there.”

Those willing to contribute, but unable to meet at 7:30 a.m., are still welcome to participate.

“Anyone can arrive and leave whenever they need to,” said Spletzer. “We appreciate whatever time you can give to help us keep our desert beautiful.”

Those with questions or concerns about the cleanup are encouraged to contact Karen Spletzer at kspletzer@bullheadcityaz.gov or 928-763-0122.
