Uncle shooter sentenced to 7.5 years

KINGMAN – A 7.5-year prison term has been ordered in the case of a Kingman man who shot his uncle a year ago. The sentence imposed December 23 by Mohave County Superior Court Judge Derek Carlisle was stipulated in a plea agreement for Zachary Sowers, 26.

The sentencing proceeding was mechanical, brief and bereft of argument since the outcome was known going into the hearing.

Deputy Mohave County Attorney Amanda Claerhout told the court in November that Sowers shot his uncle on December 19, 2024 after they quarreled regarding the uncle’s demand that Sowers move out of his home in the 2800 block of Hearne Avenue.

Sowers was arrested following a short foot pursuit after the shooting. The victim was flown to Las Vegas for trauma center treatment.

Sowers also pleaded guilty to criminal damage for breaking a video screen at the Adult Detention Center on May 30.
