Two years for illegal dumping

KINGMAN -A Kingman man is going to the Arizona Department of Corrections for illegally dumping debris in the desert near the town of Hackberry. Shaun Dougherty, 41, was convicted of criminal littering in a plea agreement.

Deputy Mohave County attorney Rod Albright told Mohave County Superior Court judge Derek Carlisle that Dougherty littered the desert with some 800 lbs. of trash off Antares Road in Dec., 2018.

Defense attorney Gerald Gavin told the Court that Dougherty is a decent and likeable man who just can’t seem to keep out of his own way.

“He works hard but he does very stupid things that complicate his life,” Gavin said. “He’s an intelligent and nice man but he gets involved in criminal activity that he should avoid.”

A Mohave County sheriff’s office report indicated that a citizen advised he discovered the dumpsite on Dec. 17, 2018. The reporting party told authorities there was mail in the debris pile that might help them identify the perpetrator.

The report said the mail trail led to Dougherty who denied responsibility and tried to lay blame on others whom he said he paid to haul the trash to the dump. Dougherty eventually confessed.

“Okay, I did it. It was me,” Doughtery told investigators. “I dumped the trash out there. I’ll take the blame for it.”

The report indicated that Dougherty also admitted two previous dumping violations at other locations north of Kingman.

Judge Carlisle imposed the 2-year prison sentence stipulated in the plea bargain.

  3. Sad he did not have respect for others that do not throw trash out for others to deal with and make the desert areas look trashy. two years is a long time to lose but it might make others that see him going to jail , think.
