Traveler kills wife with a machete in Walmart parking lot

Anthony Goodin

KINGMAN – The man arrested for using a machete to fatally injure his wife in the Kingman Walmart parking lot early Friday, July 12 rambled about religion following the deadly assault. Police reports reveal it was the alleged killer who called 911 shortly after 4:00 a.m., telling dispatchers he had stabbed his wife.

A supplemental report authored by Officer Dennis Miller indicated that dispatch advised that the reporting party “was quoting Bible scripture and religious beliefs.” The subject later identified as Anthony Goodin, 59, reportedly told dispatch that he was in the Walmart parking lot, near the Panda Express.

Deputy Police Chief Joel Freed said it was later learned that Goodin and his wife Lynda Goodin, 53, had been traveling from Alabama to California when they pulled into the parking lot and argued.

Arriving law enforcement personnel located Goodin standing in the southwest portion of the Walmart parking lot, just north of Panda Express. Goodin held a large knife later referenced as a machete in one hand and a cell phone in the other as he stood near a U-Haul with his profusely bleeding wife on the ground near the bumper on the passenger side of the box-truck.

The police reports indicate that Goodin dropped the machete when directed, but failed to comply with other commands to put his hands in the air and move away from the victim and the weapon.

“He again refused and stated that we were not listening to him, as he was stating God and Jesus had directed him to kill his wife,” Miller’s report said.

The critical need to gain access to the victim to provide life-saving measures led officer David Santana to fire the first two taser rounds that struck Goodin. The reports indicate that Goodin was struck by one or two more taser rounds fired by other officers, each proving ineffective as he repeatedly removed probes from his body.

A fifth round deployed by Officer Diego Gutierrez put him down, with three officers effecting Goodin’s arrest while others rushed in to provide aid to his wife.

Before fire department personnel arrived, police officers applied gauze to try to reduce loss of blood as the victim had stab wounds to her abdomen and a larger wound to her chest, while both of her arms were nearly severed at the elbow.

Sergeant Brandon Barkhurst reported that Mrs. Goodin attempted to rollover and to speak, but that most of what she said was inaudible. Gutierez reported understanding her to make a comment about being dead.

Mrs. Goodin was rushed to Kingman Regional Medical Center where she was pronounced dead at 4:41 a.m.

Mr. Goodin was read his Miranda rights and placed in the caged area of Santana’s police unit, where he reportedly provided information along with incriminating admissions.

Santa reported Mr. Goodin told him that he and his wife had been married for 16 years, that they faced financial challenges and that they argued because she was upset that he provided a stranger $20.

“I stabbed her, yes,” among Goodin’s admissions detailed by Santana, who drove the suspect to the police department for further questioning.

“During and after the transport, Anthony continuously talked about religion and the Bible,” Santana reported. He said that Goodin said that “the wicked are to be destroyed” and “put to death.”

Goodin was subsequently transported to the Adult Detention Center and booked on a first-degree murder charge. Investigation is ongoing.
