KINGMAN, Ariz. – A second defendant in a Lake Havasu City drug case will also be going to the Arizona Department of Corrections. Defense attorney Jaimye Ashley asked that Leslie Talbert be placed on probation so that she could help care for her ailing mother and autistic brother.
Talbert, 41, and Casey Pepper, 39, were arrested following a May 20 traffic stop. K-9 Echo alerted on the vehicle before officers seized about an ounce of fentanyl and a usable amount of methamphetamine.
During a Sept. 23 sentencing hearing in Kingman, Ashley told Mohave County Superior Court Judge Derek Carlisle that Pepper was more culpable and that her client was an addict, but not a drug dealer.
“She should have known what was happening, but did not ask questions,” Ashley said.
Prosecutor Phillip Delgado argued that Talbert should be sent to prison after pleading guilty to a charge reduced to attempted transportation of narcotic drugs.
Judge Carlisle imposed a two-year prison term. Pepper was given a four-year prison when sentenced for the same offense last month.
