KINGMAN, Ariz. – A kitten with extremely rare physical traits was found by Mohave County Animal Control in Clacks Canyon. He has four ears.
“He looks like a fantasy creature, like he’s magical,” said Mohave County Animal Shelter Director, Nicole Mangiameli.
Although he has four ears, he can only hear out of two and has the hearing of a normal cat. The additional ears cause him no pain. The extra ears can trap dirt easier and need extra cleaning.
For a kitten to be born with four ears, both parents would also have to have four ears, Mangiameli said. That’s known as recessive genetic mutation, which is extremely rare, almost a one in a million chance.
“This is the first time for us to get a kitten with four ears,” Mangiameli said, “and probably the last time.”
Midas, as the shelter has named him, needs a forever home, a quiet home with no dogs or a lot of noise Mangiameli said. “He was born to feral cats; he’s very shy, but he likes to be held.”
Midas is up for adoption. Adoption fee is $95 which includes the kitten being neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.
“What makes Midas especially remarkable to us is that underneath all the attention about his ears, he’s still simply a shelter kitten looking for a home,” Mangiameli said.
The animal shelter will be holding a raffle for Midas because a lot of people have expressed interest in adopting him.
To be included in the raffle either call the shelter at 928-753-2727 or stop by the shelter at 3423 N. Burbank Street. Deadline to register your name is Friday, October 16.
