Powerline Fire Cause of Internet/Cell Phone Outage

KINGMAN – Due to an internet and cell outage, the Kingman City Council meeting scheduled for Tuesday May 18, was canceled. Agenda items will be postponed to future meetings.

At 4:22 p.m. on May 18, units from the Kingman Fire Department (KFD) and Northern Arizona Fire District (NAFD) were dispatched for a powerline down, followed by a call for a brushfire in the same area, and then upgraded to a commercial structure fire. The total response was four engines; two from each agency. 

Once on scene on scene, advising of a tarp in the powerline with brushfire threatening a nearby business and a brushfire in the median. The brushfire near the business was extinguished by units from the NAFD, while KFD extinguished the brushfire in the median. The cause of the fire was a large plastic cover, used for covering large hay bale stacks, being lifted into the powerlines by a wind gust. UniSource representatives were also on scene advising of an extensive power outage, along with cell service interruption. Four guardrail posts along U.S. Highway 66 were damaged, and the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) was on scene assessing. There was no damage to any structures and no injuries were reported.
