NAU’s Civic Service Institute to host statewide “Day of Sharing” virtual event May 14

Northern Arizona University (NAU)’s Civic Service Institute, which sponsors Senior Corps Programs throughout most of Arizona, is hosting a statewide virtual event to introduce adults, age 55+, to service opportunities in their local communities and neighborhoods.

For many, the global pandemic has taken a toll on our ability to have consistent human interaction.  For older adults, social isolation has become more prominent.  The Senior Corps, hosted by NAU, hopes to combat that problem.  Through three very distinct volunteer service programs; Foster Grandparent, Senior Companion, and RSVP, adults age 55+ can begin to positively impact their local communities while we’re #AloneTogether.

Senior Corps Director, Erin Kruse, says “volunteers are needed now more than ever, and Senior Corps represents a unique opportunity to serve within a community of people focused on lifting others up, building new relationships, and improving their own lives. After all, what feels better than helping someone else?”

Individuals can log on, or call in, on Thursday, May 14 to learn about the specific service opportunities available in their area.  The hashtag #SeniorsServingAZ and #AZdayofsharing will be used on various social media sites and pages.

For more information or to join a local event, please contact Heather Brassil, 928-715-2200, Heather.Brassil@nau.edu

The Civic Service Institute (CSI) at NAU has been guiding adults to service opportunities in Arizona since 1985.  In addition to managing Senior Corps programs, CSI hosts three AmeriCorps Programs, an annual GEMS Flagstaff City-Wide Volunteer Recognition Event, and is a Service Enterprise Initiative Hub for Northern Arizona, through which it provides in-depth training and coaching to nonprofits to enhance their volunteer management capacity.

For more information about the Civic Service Institute at NAU, please contact Erin Kruse, Senior Corps Project Director, at 928-523-6585, or the toll free main line, 866-856-3017.
