Mohave Community College Women’s Soccer posts historic first win of inaugural regular season

Mohave Community College Women’s Soccer has notched their first-ever win of the inaugural regular season.

MOHAVE COUNTY – Mohave Community College Women’s Soccer put on an impressive showing over the weekend in California, as the Bighorns came away with a commanding 18-1 victory over Community Christian College. Saturday’s win gives the women’s squad its first-ever win of the inaugural regular season as well as the first win in conference play.

“They were very excited and relieved to get their first win,” says Women’s Head Coach Robert Podeyn of his squad. “It was the kind of game where they played together, and everybody contributed and played a role in the win. It was well-earned and well-deserved.”

Podeyn says he sees his team getting better each time they take the field, noting that it’s especially fun to watch that development in a young team.

“The teams we’ve played so far, prior to this weekend, had a combined record of 17-2-1,” Podeyn says. “So, we’ve played a very strong schedule to start and it’s been a bit humbling for a young team. But on Saturday, we were able to play our game and work on those things on which we’ve been focusing in training. It was great to see things clicking and working, and now we can build on this moving forward.”

Athletic Director and Men’s Head Coach Camilo Valencia says winning games is always hard, especially on the road.

“People see the score but they don’t realize all that comes with that, such as games starting late, playing under new lights and so much more,” he says. “It’s great for them to enjoy a win and for Coach Podeyn to get his first win at Mohave Community College because we believe in him and the program, and know how hard our women’s team has been working. We’re super happy and proud of them for coming away with this result.”

Mohave Community College Men’s Soccer also dominated the pitch on Saturday, besting Community Christian College 10-1.

The wins on Saturday mean Men’s Soccer moves into this week’s contests on a winning streak while Women’s Soccer looks to keep momentum going following their first win of the regular season. Mohave Community College Men’s Soccer is back in action at Firebird Field in Bullhead City at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, and Mohave Community College Women’s Soccer at 7 p.m., both hosting Yavapai College. Join the herd to cheer on the Bighorns as they work to maintain and begin their winning streaks!

“These are big games in our conference, with us up against teams that have won national championships in the past and teams that are at the top of the league,” Valencia says. “Right now, we’re playing up there with them but we have to win at home. So, we need a good crowd supporting our guys because it’s going to be a big game.”

“Yavapai has a strong history of being a program that competes well,” Podeyn says. “They’re a very well organized, well coached, experienced team. I look for them to be a tough challenge. For us, we’ll continue to play our game and focus on the system we’re playing, and continue to get better as we have in each of the last five games.”
