Mohave Community College Men’s Soccer kicks off inaugural regular season

The Bighorns will play their first-ever home game of the regular season at Rotary Park’s Firebird Field in Bullhead City at 8:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 30.

MOHAVE COUNTY – Mohave Community College Men’s Soccer opened regular-season play on Thursday, Aug. 22, with the inaugural squad falling 3-1 to Wyoming’s Northwest College. Men’s Head Coach Camilo Valencia says the Bighorns performed well in the first official outing of the season, adding that recovery will be the focus leading up to the next matchup.

“It was a proud moment to finally see our team on the field for a season game after a long wait,” Valencia says. “They performed well and we showed what we could do. We just need to learn how to finish games and move forward.”

Valencia says the Bighorns dominated the first half, adding that some calls didn’t go their way.

The Bighorns continued the impressive showing into the second half and secured a 1-0 lead in minute 55 courtesy of No. 16 Misael Meza. That marks the first-ever regular-season goal by an MCC Bighorn.

Northwest College then tied the game at 1 at approximately the sixty-fifth minute, and took the lead 2-1 in the seventy-third minute. With 30 seconds remaining in the contest, Northwest College scored once more to bring the final score to 3-1.

“We made some mistakes,” Valencia says. “We also had a long trip and ran out of legs at the end of the game.”

The Bighorns don’t have to wait long for another crack at their first win of the season, as Mohave Community College Men’s Soccer will be back in action at 8 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, as they visit Gillette College in Wyoming.

“Our full focus is on recovering our players’ legs and their minds so we’re ready to go on Saturday to try and get our first win of the season,” Valencia says. “This is another opportunity to improve and preparation for our conference season. We’re playing in a strong region, and these games help us find out more about our team and what we’re capable of.”
