LAKE HAVASU CITY — Lake Havasu Unified School District’s governing board recently agreed to begin negotiations with Arizona State University to purchase what was the university’s student housing on its former Havasu campus.
The board made the move after a closed session discussion at a meeting earlier this month. The dorms potentially could be part of an effort to find a new tenant at the former ASU campus off of Swanson Avenue which is owned by the school district.
That new tenant possibly could be Grand Canyon University, which Today’s News Herald has reported LHUSD Superintendent Rebeca Stone commenting on publicly recently. From a public records request, Today’s News-Herald also detailed private discussions with Grand Canyon University, city and school officials over the location of a new GCU campus.
For this article, the district declined to comment on the possibility of Grand Canyon University locating a campus in Lake Havasu City.
“Lake Havasu Unified School District continues to engage in discussions with potential lessees regarding the former ASU campus property in Lake Havasu City,” said Jason Usry, communications and community outreach coordinator for the district in a statement. “At this time, no agreements have been finalized. Any future action would be subject to Governing Board review and approval through the public process.”
The former dormitory had 42 rooms with 67 beds for students. The building itself used to be a motel until Arizona State University purchased and renovated it for student housing adjacent to campus.
ASU Havasu previously offered student housing at a hotel farther away, down Swanson Avenue when the campus originally opened in the fall of 2012.
Arizona State announced its decision to close its Havasu campus in September 2024. It closed permanently in May 2025.
