Kent Simmons: Farewell for now

kent simmons, pastor of Canyon Community Church

Dear Editor and Friends,

I have written my last article as a religion writer for The Standard Newspaper.

I want to thank you, the reader, for the privilege of listening to matters that were close to my heart.

Although I have, no doubt, not made every person pleased with my topics, my hope is that I have caused you to consider the information offered and have been challenged to form your own opinions or to dig deeper into theological perspectives.

For those that have generously encouraged me along the way, again, thank you.

To the staff at The Standard Newspaper and especially editor, Pamela Wanner, I thank all of you for the license and freedom afforded me to comment at liberty. In even the most controversial articles, you allowed me to speak.

Truly, this is evidence of your character and courage.

Soon, a new voice will emerge. My hope is that you will afford this person the same grace and interest given me.

And most importantly, despite all the mistakes churches and church people have made throughout history, three things really matter.

First, people matter. The best version of ourselves is when we selflessly and lovingly care for one another.

Second, you matter. God created you for a reason—a noble one. Do your best to live a life worthy of praise. Do so with great humility and gratitude.

Finally, Christ matters. For twenty centuries, mankind has wrestled with this man who claimed divinity. If what he said is true, then eternity rests in the balance. He is worthy to be explored.

And now, may God bless you and keep you. May He make His face to shine upon you and His glory indwell you. May your actions in this world reflect the grace and mercy you have received.

Go in peace and be fruitful!
