KINGMAN – Kingman resident John Myers won three separate awards at the 2023 Taking Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS) crowning on June 26. TOPS is a community-building weight loss program designed to support health and wellness. After losing 98 lbs this year, John reached his goal weight of 250 pounds. He won the award for Arizona State Royalty King, Arizona State Male Division Winner, and even took the position as TOPS first place International Male Division Winner. This means that John won against all American TOPS state hubs, or “chapters”, as well as all Canadian chapters. John did all of this in just one year.

John was hurting with joint pain. He felt tired and sluggish; he said he couldn’t even tie his shoes. He wanted to change his lifestyle for years, but he couldn’t find a good solution until he came to TOPS.

John joined TOPS February 1, 2023 after his wife brought him in, and weighed in at 346 lbs. He had considered himself a lifetime “WeightWatchers” follower, but decided he did not like the system at all, finding it to be “too negative.” Once he joined TOPS, John started a Keto diet. He said it was pretty effective, and he saw results for a while, so the results started to slow down. He switched to a different system, the system TOPS usually recommends: He began going to the gym and portioning his food intake with a calorie deficit, only allowing about 1,200 calories a day. John was allowed to eat whatever he wanted as long as he kept to the deficit, but with time, he began preferring more healthy options.

John will be featured in the TOPS weekly newsletter after winning in the international division.

He is hoping he can level up and win the Centenarian Award, an award a TOPS member can only achieve if they have lost 100 pounds or more.

The TOPS Queen and Runner-Ups were also crowned on June 26 at Kingman Christian Church. Darl Creager was crowned as State King Runner-Up, losing 24 pounds. Arizona State Royalty Queen Pamela Horstmeyer was also crowned at the church, with a weight loss of 66.89 pounds. And the chapter 0533’s Queen Runner-Up Vicki Creager was crowned with a weight loss of 31.8 pounds. Each winner listed is a part of the 0533 chapter in Arizona.

“Stay with your family, listen to them, and let them guide you,” said Creager, who decided he needed to make a difference in his life after going under major cardiac arrest.

TOPS holds strong ties to the medical community and is an “evidence-based” non-profit organization. The TOPS program has donated more than $9 million for research at the TOPS Center for Obesity and Metabolic Research. This program is looking to unravel the genetic correlators and genetic variants to obesity and metabolic syndrome, looking into the causes, health risks, and how to treat mortal obesity.

People interested in joining TOPS Chapter 0533 have the ability to attend one meeting free of charge. All are welcome. Meetings at Kingman Christian Church are held on Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m.

TOPS Chapter 0533 could not be more proud of their fellow TOPS family members!
