GV man charged for assault on a peace officer

John Makela

KINGMAN – A Golden Valley man was arrested after a disturbance led to an officer assault in downtown Kingman on Independence Day. Deputy Kingman Police Chief Joel Freed said officers responded at 8 p.m. to a report of a fight outside the convenience store in the 200 block of Beale St.

Freed said the officers located three subjects engaged in a verbal altercation outside the store. He said John Makela, 59, Golden Valley actively resisted when police tried to detain him.

“Officers were able to deploy a TASER on Makela but before he could be handcuffed, he caused a laceration to the face of an officer,” Freed said. He said the male officer was treated at the scene for a minor injury.

Makela was taken into custody and booked into the Adult Detention Center for aggravated assault on a peace officer and resisting arrest. Freed said impairment was a possible factor in the aggression and that four other unrelated warrants had previously issued for Makela’s arrest.
