From the Pulpit: Who, or what can persuade you?

My wife, Lynda, does not like to fly. No, that is an understatement, so, let me rephrase that! She literally hates to fly anywhere, at any time!  The feeling of a plane ascending and descending frightens her beyond just being uncomfortable, and all the coaxing in the world from me does not seem to help. Consequently, we have taken many road-trips across the country. But, eleven years ago I left her without much choice.

In 2008 I had experienced some medical problems that necessitated an early retirement. Feeling as though I may not make it much longer, I decided to fulfill a life-long dream of a 14-day cruise around the Mediterranean. When I told my wife that we were going to go, she resisted, simply because it meant we would have to take an international flight (crossing a whole lot of water), and sail out of South Hampton, England to various countries. My response to her protests was, “I’ll see you when I get back.” Needless-to-say, she was packed and ready to go, even before I was.

We had a most enjoyable trip, and now have many memories we shall never forget.

Oftentimes we get something in our head and are determined that we will never do certain things. But, then someone else coaxes us, and encourages us, and shows us what we will miss if we do not. Then, their power of persuasion convinces us to ‘give it a try.’

Proverbs 25:15 tells us, “By long forbearance a ruler is persuaded, and a gentle tongue breaks a bone.” Though we may have adamantly stated “I will never…,” the truth is that we can oftentimes be persuaded by one who lovingly and kindly gives us the encouragement we need. On the other hand, threats and anger will only make us dig our heels in and resist with all that is within us.

I am sure that you have all heard of the stubbornness of a Missouri mule. If he doesn’t want to move, you can’t make him; but, dangle a carrot over his head just a short distance in front of his face, and he will move. Gentle persuasion usually does the trick.

What motivates you? What can persuade you to do something you have sworn you will never do? What might be that one thing be? We all need to be flexible and willing to embrace new opportunities when they arise. New challenges and experiences can open us up great rewards. Never say “Never!” because you will find you usually have to eat your words.
